Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial National Committee is a non-profit Organisation. It was conceptualised & pioneered in 1981 by Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, to propagate the ideals of Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a great leader who stood against the Mughal Invasion. Shivaji was much ahead of his time, who built a fiercely nationalist society and stood against the might of foreigners’ domination and remained unconquered, while the rest of India virtually surrendered.
The first President of this Committee was Late Giani Zail Singh, the then Home Minister of India. The Committee’s HQ is located in Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi. The HQ building was inaugurated by Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the then President of India, on 15th September, 2009.
The main aim of the Society is to propagate the ideology of Shivaji Maharaj. In pursuit of this noble cause, Society carries out a number of activities across the country, aimed at promoting cultural harmony as advocated by Shivaji Maharaj. We also conduct the following activities :
Vocational training of underprivileged women to become economically independent Martial Arts training for young men and women Public libraries at Surat (Gujarat), Nashik (Maharashtra), Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Shivaji Park (Delhi)
We have undertaken a project to raise a museum spread over an area of 20,000 Sq Ft in our HQ premises. This will display artifacts & weapons from Shivaji’s time along with graphics of his forts, details of his campaigns, models of his ships, copies of his orders and other important documents. An audio visual show will depict the naval battle where the Maratha Navy defeated the Royal Navy fleet at Mumbai Fort.
